COST-TERRA SPECIAL SESSION ON COGNITIVE RADIO AND REGULATORY POLICIES FOR BODYNETS AND SENSOR NETWORKS

The COST Action IC0905 (TERRA) is a multi-disciplinary European forum focused on the coordination of techno-economic studies for the development of a harmonised European regulatory framework to facilitate the advancement and broad commercial deployment of Cognitive Radio Systems (CRSs). CRSs are expected to offer several benefits compared to traditional systems including improved efficiency of spectrum use, increased flexibility, and potential for new telecommunication applications.

Body area networks (BodyNets) are a promising radio technology with many potential applications in healthcare, surveillance, entertainment, etc. The massive deployment of BodyNets will certainly create new and complex interference scenarios. Hence, new spectrum regulation policies must be issued for BodyNets in order to guarantee their electromagnetic compatibility with other systems. Moreover, the use of CRSs for BodyNets can greatly improve their flexibility and coexistence in “crowded” parts of the radio spectrum.

This special session welcomes original and unpublished articles on relevant CRS topics applied to BodyNets and other sensor networks, including but not limited to:

  • Scenarios for the deployment of CRS in BodyNets and sensor networks
  • CRS applications in healthcare, surveillance, monitoring, and entertainment
  • Radio regulation policies for BodyNets and sensor networks
  • On-going standardisation/regulatory activities on CRS for BodyNets
  • Experimental/analytical/simulation studies on radio coexistence of BodyNets
  • CRS trials and test beds for potential application to BodyNets and sensor networks
  • Techno-economic studies on CRS
